Politics

I make it a rule to talk about politics or religion only when forced to. It never seems to lead to productive debate, only mindless arguing and occasional name calling. With that in mind, let the fray begin.
Democracy is the greatest political system ever devised by man. I will go toe-to-toe with anyone who disagrees with me on this point. However, election time depresses me every time it rolls out. It seems worse every four years when we elect a new “leader.” This country is teeming with intelligent, articulate, highly driven individuals. Does anyone want me to believe that our elected representatives are the best and brightest we have? Would you trust any of them to speak for you, your parents, or your child?
It doesn’t matter what side of the coin you are on. Don’t vote based on party lines, don’t believe the commercials, don’t trust the media. Research the candidate and their stance on the issues that are important to you. You should also check out the issues not important to you. There are usually more than two candidates for any critical office. Do not discount someone because you don’t hear his or her name every ten minutes on television.
I apologize for the interruption. Now, back to your regularly scheduled blog.

About Brian McCarrel

I am the late, great middle class working stiff that is the framework of society. Notice I didn't say foundation, that would indicate my ego was over sized. I (like many of you) am a victim of my own desire to be what those around us think we should be. But more on that later ... And excuse the grammar, I'm NOT a professional.

My thinking on this has been (for a long time) that there are indeed many intelligent, articulate, highly driven individuals in our country and they have much better things to do with their time than run for political office. Unfortunately the way the system works now is that you spend the majority of your time fighting and/or playing the system itself. I’ve seen this at the national level and all the way down to the smallest village councils. It’s a wonder we get anything done at all!

Second, it takes a different skill set to campaign and win an election than it does to actually do a good job in the office itself. So what we’re doing is electing good campaigners who may or may not be able to do the job they’ve just been elected to.

I like your idea about doing the research and checking out issues that aren’t important to me is a great idea. I wonder however how accurate the information out there really is, what with spin doctors filtering everything. I guess there are the voting records, but even those are tricky as legislation has so much junk added into each bill it’s near impossible to figure out if someone supports an issue or is voting for or against the extra fat?

Ahhh… enough of this… have a wonderful weekend!

Enough exactly! All this politics give me a headache. Another reason I dislike talking about it – or even thinking about it.
